I kind of want one, not sure why.

Also my shift linkage jammed up as I got off the highway today. Jammed it into 3rd, limped it to my office. Love the smell of burning clutch in the morning.

I like my F150 but last night I had a dream I was at an auto show and they let me test drive the new Ram 1500...

Hey, you can get it with one of the first implementations of the second-generation Van Doorne transmission design , with electronic control! (The other very early implementations were used in the Fiat Uno, Ford Fiesta, and Ford Escort.)

(Van Doorne == CVT. And the second-gen versions used a steel pushbelt instead of rubber belts.)

Basic hatches can be fun and tossa ble, but you know that. I see you have an MK3 golf.

I had a MkIII Golf at the same time my gramps had a Mazda 323 from the econo-hatch era (1990, I think) -- very similar to the Justy . My car was like a freaking luxury tank in comparison.

Huh, I didn’t know about those. I think I’d go with the 5 speed, not a CVT, though.

My dad had one in high school. Interesting story, there was a shipment of Subarus sitting in port in the early 90s that caught overspray from (what was claimed) the Navy painting a ship. At least that’s what the Subaru dealer said. The car was basically half price, and all the horizontal surfaces and the driver side of the car had the thickest clear coat you can imagine on them, it had to be 1/4" thick, but not evenly. Th ey replaced the windows that had gotten covered, and sold at a huge discount with the toughest damn paint job the car world has ever know.

At any rate, my dad was an airline pilot and used that as his airport car for years, and I drove it occasionally when the weather was bad. 5 speed manual with a red button on top of the shifter to put it in 4WD. That little bastard was unstoppable on its pizza cutter tires powered by a 3cyl engine. Hell of a good car.

I’ve heard stories of people sending Loyale wagons around corners sideways, then hitting the 4WD button to pull it out of the powerslide. Seems like a wicked fun time.

Yeah, in reality, the 5-speed is a much better option to actually drive . But the CVT’s an interesting historical curiosity due to being one of the first three electronic ones, and the first Japanese car CVT AFAIK.

I had a buddy in college get one. Super cool little car. He’d only had the car about a month- But he was a dumbass and before going on a road trip decided to change the oil. But being a total dumbass, he fuct up and drained the transmission (thinking it was the engine) and then double filled the engine......

He seized the tranny about 20 miles into his trip.... dumbass.

Sadness.

I occasionally look on Craigslist for one, they never pop up around here, probably because most things built in the late 80s have returned to the earth in New England.
